Math Explorations
through
Hands on Creations
with
Dr. Ashley Ahlin

What's included?

  • Six live 75 minute meetings
  • Club size capped at 12 students
  • Hands-on fun plus "Mathematical Meat"
  • Meetings recorded and posted in Moodle for later viewing
  • Week 1:  PopUp Fractals
  • Week 2:   Slide Rules
  • Week 3: Polyhedral Balloons
  • Week 4: Sonobe Origami
  • Week 5: Mobius Strip and Fold-and-Cut Theorem
  • Week 6: TBD based on student input!

What will we do?

Mathematics manipulatives are more rare as students progress into advanced
mathematics, but there are many fascinating hands-on mathematical explorations which
are fun, beautiful, and stimulate deeper understanding. In this six-week club, we will explore ideas like fractals, slide rules/logarithms, polyhedra, platonic solids, and  topology & symmetry.

Each week, Dr. Ahlin will introduce the activity and the associated mathematical ideas
and students will have time to interact while building their activities and have time for selected extensions, both in terms of mathematical content and creating variations. We will also allow time to share follow-up creations or questions related to prior weeks.

For more complete information, see the full description
here.

Sessions will be recorded for viewing later, as well.

Who is this for?

Any students interested in learning the mathematics behind the activities
and physical capacity to make somewhat precise folds and cuts. Students who know
more mathematics (algebra, functions, geometry, etc.) will stand to go deeper
mathematically, but no particular topics are essential.

All ages are welcome but we generally expect middle/high schoolers to be best prepared. Younger students with both high manual dexterity and mathematical depth are also welcome.
